This is a painting by Kerry James Marshall.
Intent- challenge racism in Art history.
Content- one of his paintings taken from his exhibition, Look See
Communication Objective
Using intrinsic paintings to represent equality for black people within art
How does he visually send his message?
- Marshall creates painting which only feature black people, as he feels that throughout history they have been displayed in Art in a racist way or have not been depicted at all.
- He paints their skin very dark, paying attention to the highlights of their skin. he says he does this as a response to society's attitude toward

dark skin: he says that within society the light your skin is the more privileged you are, the darker your skin is the more marginalised you become.
- he challenges this by pairing portraits of people with very dark skin, to show that is it as beautiful as any other shade of skin. (1)

  • I like the way Marshall creates very intricate paintings, with a message woven within them.
  • He paints the black people with a very dark paint to draw more attention to them, so it is apparent that the focus of the paintings is them. But it is still subtle enough for the viewer to be able to appreciate the painting as a whole
  • I will experiment with this idea, and intend to create a stream of illustrations which hold them message of equality, yet as still ascetically pleasing.
  • I may create a collection of paintings which focus in the life's of working class.
  • It will feature different aspects of their life's, from their everyday routine to the struggles of being poor.
  • I may take it a step further and do some paintings based on poverty in third world countries and show the suffering they face. I would like to also do some comparison of the simple life of these people to the extravagant living standards of the people with money in these societies.

This image is by Linder Sterling. She is an artist whom creates work portraying a message focusing on objectification of woman in media and magazines.
- the way she does is is by collaging cut outs from magazines to create a strong feminist statement
- She looks at the images in men magazine which tend to contain, pages about; sports, cars, DIY and porn.
- She then looks at the content of female magazines, which includes, fashion, domestic work and image.

- then she cuts out images from the separate magazines and combines them.
- She started doing this in 1976, a time before the style press, where woman and men hobbies were very much separated.
- she creates the art to destroy the boundaries and stereotypes surrounding men and woman, by combining the two she is bringing the two sexes together.
- she also created art work for the band the buzzcocks,
- the content of her book, the secret public was very controversial due to the explicit images it contained. (1)

  • This style Sterling uses to create art is very unique
  • I will explore the use of collage over summer as a medium.
  • I will look through magazines and newspapers article to create some illustrations relevant to my topic of in-equality.
  • I may combine other media with the collage to create a more interesting outcome.
  • I think the combination of collage and paint works nicely as it creates different surfaces and textures

I chose to look at several of his pieces because I found each is trying to  perceive a different message.
- Intent- a message about the corruption in politics
How they communicate the intent:
- anthropomorphism- the character is represented as an vulture
- vultures have negative connotations, relating to a creature which preys on the weak, much like politicians prey on the working class.
- vultures are known as scroungers, like a politician who would take all that they can with little regard for others.
(1)
Intent- portray a message about the power divide in society.
How they communicate the intent
- anthropomorphism is used in this illustration to depict the aspects of the characters personalities.
- the sheep on the left has connotations of; being submissive/controlled
- following the crowd- doesn't have own thoughts
- the wolf on the right has connotations of- being aggressive, keeping sheep in line, using violence as a force of power over those weaker than itself.
- the uniform being worn suggests they are in a military setting.
- i believe this illustration is a metaphor portraying the idea that people in power, such as members of the military, the police and the government use physical force and manipulation to keep the working class under their control, oppressed and without power.
- they are wearing military clothing to show that the Army and police force is used by the government to keep us in line.

(1)
Intent- portray a message about the problem with police brutality
How they communicate the intent
- simple image with obvious message
- I think this image is raising awareness about police brutality.
- Anthropomorphism is used again.
the character is portrayed as an ape
- apes can be aggressive
- un-usual animal to pick as their are others which would portray aggression more
- uses an animal to depict the opinion that the police force are full of animals- dumb, reactive and often aggressive
- reacting from instinct rather than logical thought
- positioning and angle of the character portrays a threatening posture

  • one of the aspects I like about this Artists work is his use of anthropomorphism
  • I intend to explore with anthropomorphism over summer, as it is an effective way to portray the characteristics of a character.

  • As my work is based on equality, I could focus an aspect of it on corruption in government, I plan to create a stream of Illustrations of various political figures anthropomorphism, with relevant choice of animals to reflect their political believes and personal tendencies.
  • I also like the way he works digitally and intend to experiment with this media and it is not a strong point of mine.

This image is taken from a project called the Water tank project by word above the street.

Intent- Send a message about the world wide water crisis.
Content- A global Art campaign, involving painting water tanks
communication objective- there is a problem with the distribution of water
How they communicate the intent
- large pieces of art, painted onto water tanks around the world
- the illustrations obviously display a message about the lack of clean drinking water in third world countries.
- done on such a vast scale more likely to raise awareness.
- painting are bright and obvious so people can't miss them

  • Over summer I will use this starting point to inspire my project
  • I like the way they are creating Art directly onto the problem, this is a great way to raise awareness

  • Over summer I will create some large scale pieces of work, as it grabs people's attention and creates a bigger statement
  • I will look into how I can project my work, and turn and perhaps turn it into a video so that my illustrations can be viewed world-wide.
  • One of my ideas for my final major project is to create a slide show of my paintings and project them onto a wall while my poem is played in spoken word.
  • I Think creating work that is on a larger scale is good if you want to make a statement.

St Hoax is an Artist who uses art to tell the ugly truth

Intent- raise awareness about domestic abuse

Content- A sequence of Graphic Illustration with a powerful message

Communication objective- Shock the audience and make them think

How they communicate the intent-
- uses the familiarity of Disney princesses to show that life isn't a fairy tale and that lot's of people are suffering in silence
- clever to use these iconic Disney characters as it grabs people's attention
- contrast between the up- beat fairytale in Disney to the harsh reality of society
- the physical marks are clear and gruesome

He uses a similar technique to raise awareness around anorexia and child abuse

  • Over summer I will explore the use of familiar charcater to portray a deeper message.
  • As my project revolves around equality, a proportion of it could focus on domestic abuse, and female rights.

  • Therefore over summer I intend to pick a variety of female superheroes and re-draw them as victims of domestic abuse
  • I will look at the idea that even if someone seems happy there may be under-lying problems.
  • I think this is a really effective way to raise awareness as it grabs people's attention
  • to ensure that my work is not too similar to St Hoax's I will use a different media to create my images and may put them into a comic book style narrative.

This work is by Vlado Kostov. He makes sculptures from scrap metal because he wants to send a message about the planet. (1)

Intent- raise awareness about scrap metal waste and the effect on the environment

content- A series of sculptures

Communication objectives-  to express a problem within society using sculpture

How they communicate the intent
- little colour- represents the colours of nature
- un-usual shapes - geometric strong shapes
- no background/ context- keeps the focus on the sculpture
- the use of scrap metal, sends a message that we waste too much and leave it to destroy the planet

Experiments over summer

  • over summer I will look at ways I can use this research to inspire my major project
  • I like the way Kostov uses natural material to create his Art and will experiment with this. I plan to go to environments (such as the beach and forest) where I can collect natural materials to use on my canvas, I may look at creating some oil paintings on pieces of wood, using them as my canvas.
  • I will explore the use of sculpture to create Art which stands out and send a powerful message. I may make models from wicker, based on my project of equality.
  • I like the idea of working with scrap metal, but do not have the correct tools for this, materislas I could experiment with are:
  • wicker
  • paper
  • paper mache
  • cardboard
  • clay
  • plasticine
  • I may also look at doing some wood etchings and printing the, to see if this media works wit my project. and the use of wood fits in nicely with using natural materials.

Week 7- Ideas of intent for major project

In preparation for this week we had to have some thought on what we wanted to investigate in our final major project.
I decided I wanted to investigate messages within Art. To do this I would like to write a poem which questions issues in society- such as class divide and create several illustrations related to the poem.

Within the lecture he gave us this hand out

After looking at the hand out, we had to discuss our ideas for out final major project.

My idea
I wish to create a poem based on problems surrounding class divide and then produce a stream of illustrations reflecting the ideas in the poem. I want to send a message to the audience, and make them question the way society works. I am considering turning the poem into a spoken word recorded performance, throughout which I will display my work on a projector.

We were then told to find several diverse starting point to express our ideas.

Week 6- Monocular vision

Intent-  the use and effectiveness of monocular viewpoint on a narrative

Content- an experimental narrative based on my research of monocular sequences

Analysis of image
-The image holds lots of emotion, as it looks like the man has returned home, perhaps from war
- it is clear there is a strong relation ship between the people in the image a family)
- it seems as though the artist wanted to focus on and draw attention to the emotion of the characters, as they fill most of the frame.

We looked at different camera angles

  • CAMERA RANGE (=the distance between the camera and object)
  • extreme long shot shot of, e.g. a large crowd scene or a view of scenery as far as the horizon“What is the effect of the ~?”
  • long shot a view of a situation or setting from a distance“the camera pulls away from the close-ups to a long shot of ………..
  • medium long shot  shows a group o f people in interaction with each other, e.g. a fight scene, with part of their surroundings in the picture
  • full shot a view of a figure’s entire body in order to show action and/or a constellation of characters
  • medium shot, mid shot, medium close shot shows a subject down to his or her waist, e.g. showing head and shoulders of two people in conversation
  • close-up a full-screen shot o f a subject’s face, showing the finest nuances of expression
  • extreme close-up (shot)detail (shot) a shot of a hand, eye, mouth or object in detail
  • POINT OF VIEW (VIEWPOINTS) (= the position from which the camera is filming)
  • establishing shot often used at the beginning of a scene to indicate the location or setting, it is usually a long shot taken from a neutral position
  • point-of-view shot, POV-shot shows a scene from the perspective of a character
  • over-the-shoulder shot often used in dialogue scenes, a frontal view o f a dialogue partner from the perspective of someone standing behind and slightly to the side of the other partner, so that parts of both can be seen
  • reaction shot short shot of a character’s response to an action
  • insert (shot) a detail shot which quickly gives visual information necessary to understand the meaning of a scene, for example a newspaper page, or a physical detail
  • reverse-angle shot a shot from the opposite perspective, e.g. after an over-the-shoulder shot
  • hand-held camera “What effect does the ~ have in the party scene?”
  • CAMERA ANGLES
  • aerial shot orhigh angle oroverhead ong or extreme long shot of the ground from the air
  • high-angle shot shows people or objects from \ above, i.e. higher than eye level
  • low-angle shot or below shot shows people or objects from below, i.e. lower than eye level
we had to question What are our communication objectives for the test content were. What we want people to think or feel when they see it?
I decided to create a stream of illustrations focusing on nature and particularly on the colours within it. To do this I went to the park and drew several rough sketches, focusing on areas where colours stood out to me. I then re-drew the images with more detail and used spot colour to make certain colours stand out.

For this project I went to the park and did some observational sketches.

For the second park of the task we had to put the sketches into a composition and pick a subject which we would use as out intent.

Intent- To portray the beautiful colours of nature
Content- A book with 8 drawings inside featuring different aspects of the park
Communication objective- I will use spot colour to highlight certain colours in nature.

I drew the images in circles to represent exactly what I saw when I was in the park. I wanted the images to be very intricate and representative. I used spot colour against the grey of the pencil so that the contrast would accentuate the  vibrancy of the colours in nature.

Week 5 Visual Language

Intent- the influence of visual language and devices on narrative

Content-  A narrative situation informed by your

communication objectives- to make a story board on a situation/ experience.

Film clip from film "North by Northwest"
Link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEpT9QC3CNU

Storyboards-

What is the reference point?
A story board for the film North by Northwest, about a man stood on the side of a road waiting to meet somebody. Satrts to talk to a man who is waiting for the bus. the bus arrives, the man leaves and the other man is alone again.

How does it work?
- simple layout- easy to follow
- realistic setting
- various angles- to keep the setting interesting
- the story board is much more detailed and exaggerated, whereas the film clips are more precise

What does it make you feel/think?
- curiosity- who is he waiting to meet?
- danger- the plane is a threat
What is the general intent?
To amuse/ entertain, record, intrigue, engage, fascinate and puzzle

Below are some observational drawing I did whilst at the beach, I based my storyboarding experiment around these images.

Week 4- starting point and experiments

For this session we had to prepare by considering the content and visually analysing the 3 starting points  (how they do what they do )- this will inform our experiments – we will be producing rough ideas for all 3 items based on our findings.

 Communication objectives (brief)
1. to communicate a sense of child hood in the form of an idealised unreliable memory
2. to communicate the abstract nature of identity.
3. to communicate the introspection of thought.

Intent-  to investigate the visual communication  of abstract – feelings and thoughts

Analysis of image
-Surrealism                            - position- gesture
-black and white                    -no context
-symbolic                               - metaphor
 -foreshadowing (fire)            -powerful image
- sticks for face, make it
stand out as it's unusual

De constructing the image with thumbnails

insert image of poem with notes and analysis

Thumbnails

I then annotated the poem

I then did some quick thumbnails, which I felt linked the ideas in the poem to the theme- half- remembered childhood, whilst bearing in the mind the surreal image we are using as a reference.

I decided to focus on the first thumbnail i drew, as it was my favourite idea. I had used a line from the poem as inspiration. The line being- "All the sun long it was running" as soon as I read the line, I had an image of a runny sun, i thought this would make an interesting subject for a surreal illustration, which would link in witch the reference image. When I though about linking it to childhood I instantly thought of runny eggs with soldiers and this formed my idea for this piece.

                                                                                           Image 2) Alfred Bestol

Content

Theme- Identity
Film- 1928 Dadaist film

ghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeosT_6vG7g

Analysis of film

-surrealism                          -non- sensical
- time                                   - abstract
- no narrative structure         -features guns and gangs

Analysis of image

- Anthropomorphism                 - specific time of year
(yet they have pets                      -friendly colour pallet
- romantic atmosphere               - fictional- idealised
- nonsense things                      - playfull-ness
(magic carpets etc.)
- contrast between                      -fantasy- characters
realistic characters                      acting oddly
(the girl guides) to
fictional characters
 (the bear.)

Deconstruction of image

I then did some quick thumbnails, which I felt linked the ideas in the film to both the theme (identity) to the reference image

I then decided to focus on the first thumbnail I sketched. To explore the theme, identity I have drawn a gangster stood in the street. His clothes are typical of a gangster yet he does not have any facial features. By doing this I feel it questions what identity is and questions the use of stereotypes. Is it the clothes you wear that defines who you are? your face? or something else completely. Unfortunately this piece is not finished. I quickly sketched in the background to set the scene. however to link it back to the illustration by Alfred Bestol I was going to paint the picture in rich colours, and paint the presence of show, with the street light illuminating the face-less figure. I felt this ascetic scene would fit in nicely with Alfred Bestol's style and be a fitting scene for the figure. However i do think that the messy lines of the pen and washed out background looks quite effective.

Theme- inside our heads                                              Image 3)  Audrey Beasley
Music-

Analysis of music
- leaves falling
-motion- flowing- movement
- lullaby
- melodic- dramatic ups and downs
-atmospheric
-cinematic
-change in mood
-water falling

Analysis of image

- Black and white              -block colour
- stylized figures               - dynamic line
- areas of texture              - mysterious/ sinister
and tone                             character

Deconstruction of image-

I then did some quick thumbnails to link the style of the image by Audrey Beasley to the theme- inside our heads, whilst bearing the composition of music in mind. I found this topic much harder than the others and found it difficult to generate ideas for the thumbnails.

Next I started to think of ideas for a final piece at first thing was difficult, but once i listened to the music again i decided to focus on the flow of the music and try to transport that onto paper. I used just black and white, as to mirror Beasley's work. To tie the theme in with the illustration, I decide to listen to the music and to try and draw what I saw in my head, I am pleased with the final outcome, I wanted it to in some ways resemble the flow of a rough sea, as this is what I saw in my head when I  heard the music, it reminded me of the tumble of waves. I wanted my drawing to show one long continuous movement, yet still contain all the fine details, much like how singular waves flow into one another and become one force, the music flows together perfectly, yet is entwined with intricate details and unique sounds. I liked the metaphor for music being a wave.
