starting point 6

reference 6

This is a painting by Kerry James Marshall.
Intent- challenge racism in Art history.
Content- one of his paintings taken from his exhibition, Look See
Communication Objective
Using intrinsic paintings to represent equality for black people within art
How does he visually send his message?
- Marshall creates painting which only feature black people, as he feels that throughout history they have been displayed in Art in a racist way or have not been depicted at all.
- He paints their skin very dark, paying attention to the highlights of their skin. he says he does this as a response to society's attitude toward

dark skin: he says that within society the light your skin is the more privileged you are, the darker your skin is the more marginalised you become.
- he challenges this by pairing portraits of people with very dark skin, to show that is it as beautiful as any other shade of skin. (1)

  • I like the way Marshall creates very intricate paintings, with a message woven within them.
  • He paints the black people with a very dark paint to draw more attention to them, so it is apparent that the focus of the paintings is them. But it is still subtle enough for the viewer to be able to appreciate the painting as a whole
  • I will experiment with this idea, and intend to create a stream of illustrations which hold them message of equality, yet as still ascetically pleasing.
  • I may create a collection of paintings which focus in the life's of working class.
  • It will feature different aspects of their life's, from their everyday routine to the struggles of being poor.
  • I may take it a step further and do some paintings based on poverty in third world countries and show the suffering they face. I would like to also do some comparison of the simple life of these people to the extravagant living standards of the people with money in these societies.
